The Melvins continue on their path to drive collectors crazy with their releases. Not to mention to make them dig deep into their pockets when it comes to the limited nature of everything they’ve been putting out as of late.
At first was…as far as I noticed at least was their The Bride Screamed Murder LP release via Amphetatime Reptile. That was insanity at $50 a pop. Melvins fans have deep pockets or so committed to the band that they don’t collect any other band whatsoever.
In time for the Melvins tour with Unsane, AmRep has out out a split 7″ of each band covering the other. Melvins doing “Alleged” off Scattered, Smothered & Covered and Unsane covering “The Bloat” off Stag. In expected fashion, the 7″ is limited and available in two different versions:
White Edition: Tri-color vinyl, Silk Screen Sleeve on white poster stock. Out of 625.
Silver Edition. Splatter color vinyl, Silk Screen Sleeve on Silver foil stock. Out of 75 numbered.
In a moment of spontaneity mixed with panic…and money sitting in my Paypal…I went with the silver edition. And that set my ass back $40! The white edition was only $20. A steal compared to the other one.
I’m all for limited editions and special covers and all the bells and whistles added to a release. I’m a sucker for some of that stuff especially when it’s bands I’m into and pursue to get all of their records. But sometimes it’s a bit much that a label asks for ridiculous amounts of money for a release solely on its limited nature. Even more so being a 7″ for $40!
Yeah, yeah, yeah…I know…if you don’t like it, then don’t buy it. No one is forcing you to buy it. Is it really needed? Will it be the end of the world if that record is not part of your collection? I have to admit that sometimes it feels that way. I am sure I’m not the only one feeling as such either.
Overall though…and getting back to the Unsane / Melvins split 7″…it is a pretty decent release. As expected from Haze XXL and AmRep, it’s artfully done and still pushing the art + music agenda that they’ve been as of late. Both bands do a great job covering each other’s songs.
Both versions are sold out from Amrep, but if you happen to catch Melvins and Unsane on their tour, they will have copies of the white edition. For $20. Each.
